Adjust Your Color Mode

Select the program you’re using for specific instructions on adjusting color mode of your images for printing.


In Adobe Photoshop:
In an Existing file:

  • In the menu, choose Select Image > Mode > CMYK
    New file:

  • Select CMYK for the mode before clicking OK

    In Adobe Illustrator:

  • Select File > Document and Select Color Mode > CMYK color

    In Adobe InDesign

    In Your New Document:

  • Be Sure to Use Pantone Solid Coated Swatches Only
  • In Your Existing Document:

  • Select Window > Swatches and Window > Color
  • Double-click Color in Swatches
  • Change color mode to CMYK & color type to Process
  • Any colors created in the document that are not in the Swatches palette need to be changed to the CMYK color space
  • Select each object you want to convert and make sure the Color palette reflects the CMYK percentages
  • Click top right arrow in the palette to change to CMYK if necessary

    In Adobe Pagemaker

  • Select Window > Show Colors
  • Double-click Colors in Palette
    Select Model to be CMYK & Type to be Process

    In CorelDraw

  • Select each object you want to convert
  • Select the Fill tool and click Fill Color Dialog
  • Make sure the color model is CMYK
  • For each object with an outline:
    Select the Outline tool and click the Outline Color Dialog
    Make sure the color model is CMYK

    In Microsoft Publisher

  • Select Tools > Commercial Printing Tools > Color Printing
  • Select Process Colors (CMYK)

    In Quark

  • Select Edit > Edit Colors > Show Colors in Use > Highlight Color > click Edit
  • Change model to CMYK; deselect Spot color

    I already have an image saved. . . how can I tell if I’m in the right mode?
    In Adobe Photoshop, the color mode is indicated next to the file name on the top bar here. This image is currently in RGB mode.

    To change it to CMYK, I go to Image > Mode > and choose CMYK Color

    And now the image is in CMYK mode as you can see on the top bar
